Port Security
PNWA supports increasing the safety and security of the region’s transportation system:
- Support $400M annually in funding for the federal port security grant program
- Port security grants should be eligible to all ports feeding cargo to or receiving cargo from federal grant-eligible ports
- Increase priority for funding smaller ports engaged in international trade, shipping cargo to or receiving cargo from such ports, and/or serving passenger vessels
- Support improving communication, information and technological capabilities, including comprehensive AIS/VTIS coverage.
- Oppose local funding requirements for port security assessments and improvements
Why this matters to you: Since the events of 9/11, security at the ports continues to be at risk. Foreign imports are transported through our ports on a daily basis. They require fast, efficient and effective screening. The ports need federal assistance t o cover these additional costs. This country cannot afford an incident that would shut down ports for days or longer. Nor can we afford a cumbersome, time consuming screening process that brings international trade to a halt. Though not security related, the temporary west coast port closures in 2002 cost the American economy approximately $1 billion per day for the first five days.
